Adventure is exciting — that’s why we do it. But the moments that matter most aren’t the adrenaline highs; they’re the moments when someone who’s been told “no” their whole life realises they can say “yes”. Seeing people with disability take part fully — not as an exception, but as equals — has shaped everything we do. At the top of the Story Bridge or stepping out at Vertigo, those moments of inclusion, pride and possibility are what stay with you.
Alongside my co-founders Nicole Were, James Hogan and Dean Anderson, and with the expertise of Mike Box from Box Wheelchairs in the USA, Sharpey has spent years designing, testing and refining genuinely accessible adventure experiences. Wheelchair-accessible adventures, we’ve developed purpose-built wheelchairs, equipment, systems and safety standards that allow people of all abilities to participate in world-class adventures — safely, confidently and with dignity.
As Brisbane and South East Queensland prepare for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, accessibility in adventure isn’t optional — it’s essential. Our success with Vertigo and Story Bridge Adventure Climb shows that inclusive design doesn’t dilute adventure; it elevates it. By opening iconic experiences to everyone, we’re helping position Brisbane as a global leader in inclusive adventure tourism — and proving that the biggest adventure of all is discovering that the limits you thought you had were never really there.
