Accessibility

Accessibility is at the core of everything we do, and it shapes our long-term vision to make Brisbane the most accessible adventure destination in the world. From the outset, our approach has been to design adventure experiences that are inclusive by intent, not adapted as an afterthought. Brisbane’s river, cliffs and public spaces provide a rare opportunity to demonstrate how adventure, accessibility and world-class urban design can coexist, allowing people of all abilities to participate in experiences that were once considered impossible.

A cornerstone of this work has been our collaboration with global adaptive-engineering leader Mike Box and our team at Adventure Wheelchairs Brisbane. Together, we have developed purpose-built adventure wheelchairs and movement systems now in operation at Vertigo at Brisbane Powerhouse and the Story Bridge Adventure Climb. These systems allow participants with mobility impairments to safely access edge walks, high-ropes elements and bridge climbs, supported by liftable frames, adaptive harnessing and cliff-line movement technology. These innovations are world-first and place Brisbane at the forefront of inclusive adventure design.

Accessibility extends beyond height-based experiences. Through Tangatours, we have introduced accessible beach wheelchairs and inclusive island experiences, enabling people with mobility limitations to enjoy the marine environments on Moreton Island. These experiences remove traditional barriers to coastal adventure, allowing families and individuals to explore places that have long been out of reach. Looking ahead, we are planning an accessible dual flying fox in Brisbane, designed from the ground up to allow side-by-side participation regardless of mobility, further reinforcing Brisbane’s leadership in inclusive adventure infrastructure.

Our work is guided by lived-experience insight and strong partnerships. We work closely with Dane Cross and Sporting Wheelies to ensure accessibility is authentic, practical and embedded across design, operations and staff training. Many of these initiatives have been supported by the Queensland Government through targeted grant funding, including programs aligned with the Year of Accessible Tourism. With government support, industry collaboration and a clear commitment to inclusive design, our goal is simple and ambitious: to ensure Brisbane is recognised globally as the most accessible adventure destination in the world.
